The pleura is a monolayer of mesothelial cells covering the lung and inner surface of the chest cavity, creating the pleural space. The mesothelial cells rest on a matrix of collagen, elastic fibers, blood vessels, and lymphatics, which allow the lung and chest to expand and contract, protected from friction by the pleural fluid and properties of the ...

Pleural disease is now recognized as an important subspecialty of pulmonary medicine, with increasing provision being made for specialist services and procedures. In response, the field of pleural imaging has advanced in recent years, especially with regard to ultrasound. Salient multimodality imaging techniques are discussed.

Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine, 1997
In this review, three aspects of pleural disease are discussed. Although it was thought for many years that the origin of pleural fluid was the capillaries in the parietal or visceral pleura, recent evidence suggests that in many cases the origin of pleural fluid is the interstitial space of the lung.

This review attempts to provide up to date information on structure/function relationships of the pleura and on the pathology of pleural effusions, pneumothorax, pleural repair, pleural infections, pleural involvement in systemic connective tissue disorders, non-malignant asbestos-induced pleural disease, mesothelioma and other pleural tumours.

The pleural cavity is the potential space between the two pleurae (visceral and parietal) of the lungs. The pleurae are serous membranes which fold back onto themselves to form a two-layered membranous structure.

Transport of water and solutes across sheep visceral pleura.
American Review of Respiratory Disease, 2015The fluid and solute transport properties of pleural tissue were studied using specimens of intact visceral pleura from adult sheep lungs. After thoracotomy, a shallow incision through the pleural surface permitted 10-cm2 by 10-micrometer pieces of ...

Radiologic imaging of the pleura has undergone dramatic changes in the past 5 years. This can be primarily attributed to the availability and better understanding of computed tomography and, to a lesser extent, ultrasonography. When used in the proper clinical-radiologic environment, abnormalities of the pleural space can be quickly identified ...
