The lung function tests on 88 asbestos workers known to have an asbestos-related abnormality on the chest radiography have been analysed with respect to pleural disease. The degree of intrapulmonary and pleural disease were assessed by reading posteroanterior and both oblique films according to a modified ILO U/C Classification (1971). The results show

Abstract The pleural space is lined by the parietal and visceral pleurae. The parietal pleura covers the inner surface of the thoracic cavity, including the mediastinum, diaphragm, and ribs. The visceral pleura covers all lung surfaces, including the interlobar fissures. The right and left pleural spaces are separated by the mediastinum.

The incidence of pleural disease is increasing and the mortality and morbidity is high. Many recent RCTs have resulted in evidence-based guidelines published in 2023, pointing towards a more individualized and specialized management. Most patients with pleural disease are admitted at the A & E but can be managed in outpatient clinics.

Pleural disease encompasses a wide range of pathological processes, many of which are common and increasing in incidence. Patients with pleural disease are encountered by both respiratory specialists and general physicians, and a systematic approach to their management helps in targeting investigation and optimizing patient care.
