Prevalence of Smoking Among Spontaneous Pneumothorax Patients and Its Impact on Treatment in Syria Country: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 8, Issue 4, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims Spontaneous Pneumothorax (SP) is a case where air is collected in the pleural space, with smoking recognized as a major risk factor. Despite the global burden of SP, there is limited research on its prevalence and recurrence in Middle Eastern populations, particularly in Syria.

Effect of Opioids vs NSAIDs and Larger vs Smaller Chest Tube Size on Pain Control and Pleurodesis Efficacy Among Patients With Malignant Pleural Effusion: The TIME1 Randomized Clinical Trial.

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 2015
IMPORTANCE For treatment of malignant pleural effusion, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are avoided because they may reduce pleurodesis efficacy. Smaller chest tubes may be less painful than larger tubes, but efficacy in pleurodesis has not

Data‐driven prediction of prolonged air leak after video‐assisted thoracoscopic surgery for lung cancer: Development and validation of machine‐learning‐based models using real‐world data through the ePath system

open access: yesLearning Health Systems, Volume 9, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract Introduction The reliability of data‐driven predictions in real‐world scenarios remains uncertain. This study aimed to develop and validate a machine‐learning‐based model for predicting clinical outcomes using real‐world data from an electronic clinical pathway (ePath) system.

Successful Management of Refractory Chylothorax in Preterm Infants Using Hypertonic Glucose Pleurodesis [PDF]

open access: yesNeonatal Medicine
Neonatal chylothorax is a potentially fatal respiratory condition caused by a congenital or traumatic etiology. Conventional therapies, such as fasting, total parenteral nutrition, and intravenous octreotide, are generally successful in such cases ...

Effectiveness of chemical pleurodesis in spontaneous pneumothorax recurrence prevention: a systematic review

open access: yesThorax, 2016
Objectives Spontaneous pneumothorax is a common pathology. International guidelines suggest pleurodesis for non-resolving air leak or recurrence prevention at second occurrence.

Successful management of extremely high‐output refractory congenital chylothorax with chemical pleurodesis using 4% povidone–iodine and propranolol: a case report

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, 2018
First‐line therapy for congenital chylothorax is conservative treatment. However, surgical intervention or chemical pleurodesis is required for refractory cases.

Efficacy of mistletoe for chemical pleurodesis in rats without malignancy

open access: yesOpen Medicine, 2015
Chemical pleurodesis is an effective treatment modality to reduce recurrence of malignant effusion. Several agents have been used in chemical pleurodesis but, it is not yet clear which is better.

Clinically important associations of pleurodesis success in malignant pleural effusion: Analysis of the TIME1 data set

open access: yesRespirology (Carlton South. Print), 2019
Chemical pleurodesis is performed for patients with MPE with a published success rate of around 80%. It has been postulated that inflammation is key in achieving successful pleural symphysis, as evidenced by higher amounts of pain or detected ...

Urinothorax With Fungal Empyema—A Rare and Unique Combination

open access: yesRespirology Case Reports, Volume 13, Issue 4, April 2025.
This case describes a patient presenting with symptomatic unilateral pleural effusion after a urological procedure which was initially treated and resolved. It subsequently recurred and was complicated by fungal pleural infection. It was treated as urinothorax.
