Warmer Is Deadlier: A Meta‐Analysis Reveals Increasing Temperatures Accentuate Disease Effects on Fisheries Hosts

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 28, Issue 7, July 2025.
We conducted a meta‐analysis using 266 effect sizes from 52 empirical papers on harvested aquatic species and determined the relationship between parasite‐induced host mortality and temperature and how this relationship was altered by host, parasite, and study design traits.

The genome sequence of the thickback sole, Microchirus variegatus (Donovan, 1808) [version 1; peer review: 2 approved]

open access: yesWellcome Open Research
We present a genome assembly from an individual female Microchirus variegatus (the thickback sole; Chordata; Actinopteri; Pleuronectiformes; Soleidae). The genome sequence is 724.7 megabases in span. Most of the assembly is scaffolded into 23 chromosomal

Convergent Evolutionary Dead‐End and Breakdown of Hard Chorion in Parental‐Egg‐Care Fish Reproductive Strategies

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 13, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Fish exhibit a diverse array of reproductive strategies adapted to various ecological niches. Parental egg‐care, including live‐bearing, mouth‐brooding, and male egg protection by brood pouches, represents an effective strategy for ensuring larval survival and has emerged independently in multiple lineages.

Detection of growth-related QTLs in turbot (Scophtalmus maximux) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background The turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) is a highly appreciated European aquaculture species. Growth related traits constitute the main goal of the ongoing genetic breeding programs of this species. The recent construction of a consensus linkage map

Of Biogeography, Fishes and Kelp: Environmental DNA Metabarcoding the Great African Seaforest

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 31, Issue 6, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim The biodiversity associated with kelp forest ecosystems is understudied globally, including in South Africa, where kelp forests have expanded their range under climate change. This study used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to assess fish biodiversity across an expansive range (~1000 km) of South Africa's kelp forests, contributing ...

Megalocytivirus: A Review of Epidemiology, Pathogenicity, Immune Evasion, and Prevention Strategies

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 17, Issue 3, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Megalocytivirus, a large double‐stranded DNA virus belonging to the Iridoviridae family, has infected over 100 species of fish, leading to significant economic losses in the aquaculture, food, and ornamental fish industries. These viruses exhibit icosahedral symmetry and have diameters ranging from 120 to 200 nm.

tinyVAST: R Package With an Expressive Interface to Specify Lagged and Simultaneous Effects in Multivariate Spatio‐Temporal Models

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 34, Issue 4, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Multivariate spatio‐temporal models are widely applicable, but specifying their structure is complicated and may inhibit wider use. We introduce the R package tinyVAST from two viewpoints: the software user and the statistician. Innovation From the user viewpoint, tinyVAST adapts a widely used formula interface to specify generalised ...

Trophic ecology of groundfishes in nearshore areas of the Gulf of Maine

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 106, Issue 4, Page 1095-1111, April 2025.
Abstract Ecosystem management requires an integrated understanding of ecological interactions. In the Gulf of Maine (GoM), trophic information pertaining to commercially important groundfishes and nearshore prey communities is lacking. We characterized nearshore communities and groundfish diets using data collected from nearshore surveys (864 bottom ...
