Breathable Graphene Oxide‐Polymer Composite Membranes With Two‐Step Barrier Mechanism Against Nerve Agents

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Breathable membranes that reject chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are required for next‐generation protective apparel. A dual‐function graphene oxide (GO)‐polyamine architecture is introduced that addresses the long‐standing tradeoff between vapor transmission and CWA selectivity.

Microbial community dynamics and cycling of plutonium and iron in a seasonally stratified and radiologically contaminated pond

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Plutonium (Pu) cycling and mobility in the environment can be impacted by the iron cycle and microbial community dynamics. We investigated the spatial and temporal changes of the microbiome in an iron (Fe)-rich, plutonium-contaminated, monomictic ...

In situ beam reduction of Pu(IV) and Bk(IV) as a route to trivalent transuranic coordination complexes with hydroxypyridinone chelators

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, 2022
The solution-state interactions of plutonium and berkelium with the octadentate chelator 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) (343-HOPO) were investigated and characterized by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, which revealed in situ reductive decomposition of the tetravalent

Tissue Engineered Human Elastic Cartilage From Primary Auricular Chondrocytes for Ear Reconstruction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Despite over three decades of research, no tissue‐engineered solution for auricular reconstruction in microtia patients has reached clinical translation. The key challenge lies in generating functional elastic cartilage ex vivo. Here, we integrate synergistic cell‐biomaterial strategies to engineer auricular grafts with mechanical and histological ...

Sensitivity studies of PWR MOX fuel management to the plutonium initial vector using Artificial Neural Networks [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences
This paper presents new metamodels based on artificial neural networks trained on full core 3D depletion simulations performed with APOLLO2 and CRONOS2. They are used to estimate the irradiation cycle length, discharge burn-up of each fuel assembly type ...

Size and structure of hexanuclear plutonium oxo-hydroxo clusters in aqueous solution from synchrotron analysis

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, 2022
The size and shape of a water-soluble hexanuclear plutonium cluster were probed by combining synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS).

4D‐Printable Poly(Thio)urethane Photoresins With Reactive Oxygen Species Responsiveness and Anti‐Inflammatory Functionality

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces UV‐curable poly(thio)urethane (PSU) thermosets as 4D printable scaffolds responsive to oxidative stress. PSU networks with 100 wt.% polypropylene glycol (PPG) effectively suppress inflammatory markers in microglial cells to basal values.

Development and application of the civil plutonium database in Russia

open access: yesNuclear Energy and Technology, 2017
By now, vast amounts of plutonium have been accumulated in spent nuclear fuel from different types of reactors (power, research, propulsion) as part of the Soviet (Russian) nuclear program.

Interaction of Th(IV), Pu(IV) and Fe(III) with ferritin protein: how similar?

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, 2022
Ferritin is the main protein of Fe storage in eukaryote and prokaryote cells. It is a large multifunctional, multi-subunit protein consisting of heavy H and light L subunits.

Multiconfigurational nature of 5f orbitals in uranium and plutonium intermetallics

open access: yes, 2012
Uranium and plutonium's 5f electrons are tenuously poised between strongly bonding with ligand spd-states and residing close to the nucleus. The unusual properties of these elements and their compounds (eg.
