2006Streptococcus pneumoniae, pneumococcus, is one of the major bacterial pathogens of childhood. Infections caused by this organism range from the very severe (e.g., meningitis and septicaemia), to non-bacteremic pneumonia and to less severe upper respiratory tract infections such as acute otitis media and sinusitis.
