THE PROBLEM OF LIPID PNEUMONIA
Journal of the American Medical Association, 1940It is now fifteen years since Laughlen 1 called attention to a type of pneumonia caused by the aspiration into the lungs of oily medicaments administered either intranasally or by mouth. Of the several names which have been applied to the condition, such as lipoid pneumonia, lipid pneumonia, fat pneumonia, steatosis of the lungs, pneumonoliposis ...

Lipid peroxidation in the blood in pneumonia
Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1984In rabbits with pneumonia induced by introduction of a foreign body to the trachea, a correlation was found between the morphological features of pneumonia (the degree and spreading of alterative-exudative and proliferative processes) and lipid peroxidation in the blood (the concentration of diene conjugates in plasma lipids, catalase activity, the ...

Chemical Composition and Serology of Mycoplasma pneumoniae Lipids
Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1973M. pneumoniae strain 65-2053 was grown on glass in a buffered medium containing PPLO broth (Difco), 3% PPLO Serum Fraction (Difco), and 5 tg of oleic acid per ml, as we have previously described [8]. Cells were harvested before the pH of the overlaying culture fluids reached 6.5. Membranes were obtained by osmotic lysis [9].

Ultrastructural Changes in Experimental Lipid Pneumonia
Research in Veterinary Science, 1969Summary The intra-tracheal administration of liquid paraffin to mice produced ultrastructural changes in the lungs. There was destruction of alveolar epithelial cells, and swelling and increased vesiculation of capillary endothelium, with exudation of amorphous electron-dense material.

Lipids that accumulate within airways and alveolae are difficult to remove and may lead to an inflammatory response. Exogenous lipid can be aspirated in those with impaired swallowing mechanisms who take or are given agents such as olive oil or paraffin, or can be inhaled from oil aerosols/mists.

MUCOLYTIC AEROSOL THERAPY FOR LIPID PNEUMONIA
Journal of the American Medical Association, 1959A patient was hospitalized for pneumonia in 1954 after working for a year as an insect exterminator. Polycythemia and severe clubbing of fingers and toes were present in addition to roentgenographic evidence of severe pulmonary damage. In 1956 he was found to have chronic pulmonary tuberculosis.

Lipid aspiration pneumonia due to gastroesophageal reflux
Pediatric Radiology, 1989The development of lipid aspiration pneumonia after chronic nasopharyngeal installation of mineral oil was first described in 1925 by Laughlin. Since that time this entity has been well recognized and numerous substances have been identified or implicated as the aspirated material.

ENDOGENOUS LIPID PNEUMONIA IN OPOSSUMS FROM LOUISIANA
Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1988Endogenous lipid pneumonia was present in 19 of 27 opossums (Didelphis virginiana) trapped in the vicinity of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The severity of lesions varied from small pleural and subpleural aggregates of foamy macrophages with minimal disruption of pulmonary architecture to large nodular accumulations of foam cells with cholesterol clefts and ...
