Lipoid pneumonia occurs due to the accumulation of lipids within the lung tissue. Autopsy series have reported an incidence of 1.0-2.5% in adult and 8.8% in children. Lipoid pneumonia can be from an exogeneous or an endogenous source. Exogenous lipoid pneumonia is often associated with aspiration of fatty materials, whereas endogenous lipoid pneumonia ...

To assess the CT findings of lipoid pneumonia.Chest radiography and CT performed in six patients with proven lipoid pneumonia were reviewed by two observers. Diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy (five cases) or bronchoalveolar lavage (one case). The clinical history of taking oily substance could be obtained retrospectively in all patients.Chest ...

Pneumonia due to the aspiration of oily preparations into the lungs was first described by Laughlen 1 in 1925. Subsequently other reports have appeared, so that in 1936 Ikeda 2 was able to collect 24 references to this condition. Lipoid pneumonia usually occurs in debilitated infants or children, although its occurrence in adults has been described ...

The most common sources for lipids producing radiographic or clinical evidence of disease in the lungs are endogenous lipids and inhaled (exogenous) mineral oil. Endogenous lipoid pneumonia arises when lung tissue breaks down distal to an obstructed airway leading to the release of cholesterol and other lipids, producing airspace disease.
