Berries and bullets: influence of food and mortality risk on grizzly bears in British Columbia Bayas y balas: influencia de la alimentación y el riesgo de mortalidad en los osos grizzly en la Columbia Británica Des baies et des balles: influence de l'alimentation et risques de mortalité chez les ours grizzlys de la Colombie‐Britannique

open access: yesWildlife Monographs, Volume 213, Issue 1, November 2023., 2023
We developed a spatialized surface for the primary food of grizzly bears in southeast British Columbia. After using this huckleberry patch layer to model habitat selection, fitness, and density, in a bottom‐up top‐down paradigm, we found that huckleberry patches near forestry roads contribute very little to fitness and density.

Combining otolith chemistry and genetics to infer the population structure of yellow snapper Lutjanus argentiventris

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 14, Issue 10, October 2023., 2023
Abstract Developing a metapopulation framework contributes to the understanding of spatial processes and structures in populations, providing basic information for conservation biology. However, the extent to which the metapopulation structure differs geographically and across life history stages is unexplored for most fishes.

Meta‐analysis of Red List conservation assessments of Mexican endemic and near endemic tree species shows nearly two thirds of these are threatened

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 5, Issue 4, Page 581-599, July 2023., 2023
Mexico's extraordinary tree diversity is threatened by the increasing demand for resources because of the tenfold population growth in the last century. The conservation status of trees, and both urban and rural livelihoods, are also negatively affected by agriculture, mining and tourism.

Replicate contact zones suggest a limited role of plumage in reproductive isolation among subspecies of the variable seedeater (Sporophila corvina)

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 13, Page 3586-3604, July 2023., 2023
Abstract After establishing secondary contact, recently diverged populations may remain reproductively isolated or may hybridize to a varying extent depending on factors such as hybrid fitness and the strength of assortative mating. Here, we used genomic and phenotypic data from three independent contact zones between subspecies of the variable ...

Modeling genetic benefits and financial costs of integrating biobanking into the conservation breeding of managed marsupials

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 37, Issue 2, April 2023., 2023
Abstract Managed breeding programs are an important tool in marsupial conservation efforts but may be costly and have adverse genetic effects in unavoidably small captive colonies. Biobanking and assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) could help overcome these challenges, but further demonstration of their potential is required to improve uptake. We
