Brightness illusion in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata).
Journal of Comparative Psychology, 2016A long-standing debate surrounds the issue of whether human and nonhuman species share similar perceptual mechanisms. One experimental strategy to compare visual perception of vertebrates consists in assessing how animals react in the presence of visual illusions.

Guppies, Poecilia reticulata, perceive a reversed Delboeuf illusion
Animal Cognition, 2019Animals are often required to estimate object sizes during several fitness-related activities, such as choosing mates, foraging, and competing for resources. Some species are susceptible to size illusions, i.e. the misperception of the size of an object based on the surrounding context, but other species are not.

Visual pigment polymorphism in the guppy poecilia reticulata
Vision Research, 1987Visual pigment polymorphism similar to that found in primates is described in the photoreceptors of wild-caught guppies (Poecilia reticulata). Microspectrophotometric examination of retinal cells revealed rod visual pigments with a lambda max close to 503 nm.
