Jaw Angle Modulation in Response to Different Feeding Scenarios inPoecilia sphenops
Journal of the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science, 2015Abstract The molly (Poecilia sphenops) has an unusual feeding mechanism among fishes in that its jaw is essentially “doublejointed”. They possess an extra joint within the lower jaw, or mandible, called an Intramandibular Joint (IMJ). Because of this joint, these fish are capable of opening their mouths to extreme angles.

Changing the Stimulus ♀ induced in ♂♂ of the poeciliid fish Poecilia sphenops a strong increase of copulation attempts, nipping and gonopodial swinging (“Coolidge effect”). There was a similar increase of sexual activities after social isolation of 23 hours and reintroducing the same ♀ like before.

Supraependymal cells in the third ventricle of Poecilia sphenops.
Anatomischer Anzeiger, 1982The ependymal surface of the third ventricle in the hypothalamus of the black molly (Poecilia sphenops) was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Supraependymal cells were observed and could be categorized generally into two varieties, Types 1 and 2. P.

As being the main energy source that is needed for all of the industrial processes, crude oil is evaluated as a widely investigated ecotoxicant. In order to identify the effects of crude oil on the skin of teleosts, Poecilia sphenops specimens were exposed to three different concentration of soluble part of crude oil (10%, 20%, 40%) at four different ...

In the Netherlands Antilles, opposite the Venezuelan coast, the cyprinodont fish Poecilia sphenops vandepolli is found in fresh water, in brackish water, in the sea and in supersaline water. When comparing the populations from fresh water, sea water and supersaline water some significant morphological differences were found, e.g.
