Mosquito responses to lethal and nonlethal effects of predation and an insect growth regulator

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 12, Issue 3, March 2021., 2021
Abstract Lethal and nonlethal effects of predation are likely to impact phenotypic traits of potential prey that elude capture. Nonlethal effects of predation on prey can include alterations in behavior or morphology in response to predation risk which may impair prey growth and fitness.

Predator avoidance in extremophile fish [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Extreme habitats are often characterized by reduced predation pressures, thus representing refuges for the inhabiting species. The present study was designed to investigate predator avoidance of extremophile populations of Poecilia mexicana and P ...

Impact of Household Chemicals on the Ornamental Fish Poecilia sphenops (Valenciennes)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Scientific Research in Science, Engineering and Technology, 2023
This study examined the impact of various household chemicals, such as Surf excel, hair dye, popular soap, fabric softener, shampoo, and coconut oil, on the ornamental fish Poecilia sphenops (Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1846). Length-weight relationships, gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indexes, oxygen consumption, and opercular beat rate

Female mating preferences in blind cave tetras Astyanax fasciatus (Characidae, Teleostei). [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The Mexican tetra Astyanax fasciatus has evolved a variety of more or less color- and eyeless cave populations. Here we examined the evolution of the female preference for large male body size within different populations of this species, either surface-

Improving Inference Within Freshwater Community Studies: Accounting for Variable Detection Rates of Amphibians and Fish. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We used three sampling methods at freshwater ponds to survey amphibian and fish communities in an urbanised landscape. We found highly variable detection probabilities among nine amphibian species and higher detection rates for fish. The detection of fish at a pond reduced the probability of detecting amphibians.

Predator-induced changes of female mating preferences: innate and experiential effects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background: In many species males face a higher predation risk than females because males display elaborate traits that evolved under sexual selection, which may attract not only females but also predators. Females are, therefore, predicted to avoid such
