REPRODUCTIVE ADAPTATIONS AMONG VIVIPAROUS FISHES (CYPRINODONTIFORMES: POECILIIDAE)

Evolution; International Journal of Organic Evolution, 1978
Adaptations for placing a maximum number of mature offspring in the next generation fall between the two adaptive extremes of having either high reproductive rates and low survival rates or low reproductive rates and high survival rates. Among the fishes, both extremes have been realized; for example, the ling, Molva molva may produce 20-30 X 106 eggs ...

Presence of an Intrapineal Circadian Oscillator in the Teleostean Family Poeciliidae

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 1999
In most fish, rhythmic melatonin production is controlled by circadian oscillators located within the pineal (=pineal clocks) that are reset daily by the ambient light:dark (LD) cycle. However, one question that has yet to be addressed concerns the phylogenetic distribution of the pineal clock within fish families.
