ABSTRACT This essay addresses the ongoing scholarly tension between the monotheistic interpretations of late pre‐Islamic Arabian religion, pioneered by G. Hawting and P. Crone, and the traditional accounts of rampant Arabian polytheism found in later Islamic literary sources.
