Sve što znamo o Rutebeufovu životu i djelu izvodimo iz njegova pjesništva. Pjesnik sam sebi daje ime Rutebeuf u petnaest od ukupno pedeset i šest pjesama koliko ih je sačuvano u rukopisima. Podrijetlom je bio iz francuske pokrajine Champagne, ali je najveći dio života proveo u Parizu gdje je i umro o. 1285. godine.
