Implicit Geometry Partition for Point Cloud Compression

Octree (OT) geometry partitioning has been acknowledged as an efficient representation in state-of-the-art point cloud compression (PCC). In this work, a new geometry partition and coding scheme is proposed to improve the OT based coding framework, in which the quad-tree (QT) and binary-tree (BT) partitions are introduced.

It is challenging to measure the geometry distortion of point cloud introduced by point cloud compression. Conventionally, the errors between point clouds are measured in terms of point-to-point or point-to-surface distances, that either ignores the surface structures or heavily tends to rely on specific surface reconstructions.

Recently, structured-light-based scanning systems have gain in popularity and are capable of modeling entire dense shapes that evolve over time with a single scan (a.k.a. one-shot scan). By projecting a static grid pattern onto the object surface, one-shot shape reconstruction methods can scan moving objects while still maintaining dense reconstruction.
