We begin by revising some basic ideas. The probability density function of a random variable may contain one or more unknown parameters. One task of statistical analysis is to find ‘reasonable’ estimates of such parameters. This may sound coldly abstract since it springs from describing a mathematical model of a real situation.

Unbiased estimators and mean squared error should be familiar to the reader. A UMVUE is an unbiased point estimator, and complete sufficient statistics are crucial for UMVUE theory. Want point estimators to have small bias and small variance. An estimator with bias that goes to 0 and variance that goes to the FCRLB as the sample size n goes to infinity

In our discussion of point estimation, we have yet to present any generally applicable procedures that lead to specific functional forms for estimators of q(Θ) and that can be relied upon to define estimators that generally have good estimator properties.
