Insights into PI3K/AKT signaling in B cell development and chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Review explores how the phosphoinositide 3‐kinase and protein kinase B pathway shapes B cell development and drives chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a common blood cancer. It examines how signaling levels affect disease progression, addresses treatment challenges, and introduces novel experimental strategies to improve therapies and patient outcomes.

Consensus of the Study Group for Point-of-Care Lung Ultrasound in the intensive care management of COVID-19 patients

open access: yesAnaesthesiology Intensive Therapy, 2020
Respiratory failure is a dominating medical issue in the severe course of COVID-19. Both at the stage of diagnostics prior to admission to the intensive care unit and during the monitoring of lesion evolution, diagnostic imaging techniques may ...

Integrated Optofluidic Sensor for Coagulation Risk Monitoring in COVID-19 Patients at Point-of-Care [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
While the pathophysiology underlying the COVID-19 infection remains incompletely understood, there is growing evidence to indicate that it is closely correlated to hypercoagulation among severely ill patients. Doctors may choose for use anti-coagulation doses to treat the patients at intensive care units. A rapid, easy, and low-cost solution to monitor

Point-of-care ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology

open access: yesArchives of Gynecology and Obstetrics, 2021
The rapid technical development and portability of ultrasound systems over recent years has had a profound impact on the area of point-of-care-ultrasound (POCUS), both in general medicine and in obstetrics and gynecology.

Ablation of LRP6 in alpha‐smooth muscle actin‐expressing cells abrogates lung inflammation and fibrosis upon bleomycin‐induced lung injury

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Low‐density lipoprotein receptor‐related protein 6 (LRP6) is a key receptor for the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf1 (DKK1). DKK1 protein expression is induced in a bleomycin (BLM)‐induced lung injury model. We show that DKK1 induces proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in lung fibroblasts.

A Machine Learning System for Retaining Patients in HIV Care [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Retaining persons living with HIV (PLWH) in medical care is paramount to preventing new transmissions of the virus and allowing PLWH to live normal and healthy lifespans. Maintaining regular appointments with an HIV provider and taking medication daily for a lifetime is exceedingly difficult.

Making tau amyloid models in vitro: a crucial and underestimated challenge

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review highlights the challenges of producing in vitro amyloid assemblies of the tau protein. We review how accurately the existing protocols mimic tau deposits found in the brain of patients affected with tauopathies. We discuss the important properties that should be considered when forming amyloids and the benchmarks that should be used to ...

Point-by-Point Progress: Gonorrhea Point of Care Tests

open access: yesExpert Review of Molecular Diagnostics, 2020
Point-of-care (POC) tests for Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ng) are urgently needed to control the gonorrhea epidemic, so patients can receive immediate diagnoses and treatment. While the advent of nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) has improved the accuracy of Ng identification, very few POC assays are able to provide results of such tests at the ...
