Occurrences of Vortices at an Intake of Point Sink Character [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In this study, the occurrence of vortices entering the intake of point sink character is explained by fluid mechanics principles. All types of boundaries (air, solid, fluid interface and flow-dividing subsurface) cause obstruction effects on the intake flow. A vortex basically originates from the boundary that has obstruction effects on the intake flow.

Relative equilibria of point vortices on the sphere [PDF]

open access: yesPhysica D: Nonlinear Phenomena, 2001
We prove the existence of many different symmetry types of relative equilibria for systems of identical point vortices on a non-rotating sphere. The proofs use the rotational symmetry group SO(3) and the resulting conservation laws, the time-reversing ...

Global Phase Diagrams of Three Point Vortices

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2022
In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of three-vortex systems and give a global phase diagram analysis with different types of parameters on the plane. By using the invariants to construct canonical transformations, the Hamiltonian of the three-vortex system is reduced to a desired two-dimensional Hamiltonian.

Nonergodicity of point vortices

Physics of Fluids A: Fluid Dynamics, 1991
The motion of N point vortices in a two-dimensional fluid is a Hamiltonian dynamical system with a 2N-dimensional phase space. The equations of motion for point vortices in a two-dimensional square doubly periodic domain are derived from those for an open domain.

On the dynamics of point vortices

International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1990
The dynamics of a group of point vortices are studied numerically using several numerical integration schemes. From numerical experiments it is concluded that the computations must be performed with extreme care (high precision and very small time steps of integration).
