Analysis of arching around shallow tunnels using the boundary element approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper describes a study of the effect of soil arching around shallow tunnels using the Boundary Element Method. Due to the different stiffnesses of the soil and the underground structure, then, under surface loading, the differential displacements ...

Anisotropic properties of mechanical characteristics and auxeticity of cubic crystalline media

open access: yes, 2006
Explicit expressions for inverse of Young's modulus E, inverse of shear modulus G, and Poisson's ratio for cubic media are considered. All these characteristics of elastic media depend on three components of the compliance tensor S, and on direction ...

Melt Grafting of Geometry‐Tailored Voltage Stabilizers for High‐Performance Polypropylene Insulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A scalable one‐step melt grafting strategy is developed to enhance the dielectric properties of isotactic polypropylene by covalently incorporating thermally stable aromatic voltage stabilizers. This solvent‐free approach improves volume resistivity and DC breakdown strength through deep trap formation and charge localization, offering a sustainable ...

Multilayer Soft Photonic Arrays Inspired by Cephalopod Skin for High‐Density, Independent, and Multimodal Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A vertically stacked, DEA‐driven photonic array inspired by cephalopod skin, featuring highly crystalline colloidal crystal gels with vivid color, low FWHM and scalability is presented. The multilayer design removes lateral pixel interference, achieving near‐100% fill factor with fully independent RGB actuation.

An Analytical and Numerical Investigation of Auxeticity in Cubic Crystals and Frameworks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Negative Poisson’s ratio, or auxetic, materials present the possibility of designing structures and components with tailored or enhanced mechanical properties. This thesis explores the phenomenon of auxetic behaviour in cubic crystals using classical and

Geometry‐Dependent Adhesion in Transparent Monodomain Liquid Crystal Elastomers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid Crystal Elastomers (LCEs) are emerging as exciting pressure‐sensitive adhesives. We examine adhesion in chemically identical elastomer films, exploring the influence of geometry (director orientation) and phase (nematic or isotropic). We demonstrate the potential of these aligned films as transparent, tunable, broad‐temperature‐range smart ...
