Abstract The choice of statistical distributions characterising microbial counts is essential in risk assessment and risk management. While the lognormal distribution has been long used to directly model the microbial data obtained from food samples, it does not allow for complete absence of microorganisms in a sample.

Several studies have shown that the Poisson-lognormal (PLN) offers a better alternative compared to the Poisson-gamma (PG) when data are skewed while the PG is a more reliable option otherwise.

A priori estimation of sample size and subject accrual in multi‐site, time‐to‐event clinical trials is often challenging. Such trials are powered based on the number of events needed to detect a clinically significant difference. Sample size based on number of events relates to the expected duration of observation time for each subject.

The logarithmic poisson gamma distribution: A model for leadtime demand
Naval Research Logistics Quarterly, 1982AbstractThis paper considers an inventory system in which demand occurrences arise according to a stationary Poisson process, demand sizes at each occurrence follow a logarithmic distribution, and leadtimes are random variables with the gamma distribution.
