A comparison between the discrete Poisson-gamma and Poisson-lognormal distributions to characterise microbial counts in foods

Food Control, 2011
Abstract The choice of statistical distributions characterising microbial counts is essential in risk assessment and risk management. While the lognormal distribution has been long used to directly model the microbial data obtained from food samples, it does not allow for complete absence of microorganisms in a sample.

Characteristics-based heuristics to select a logical distribution between the Poisson-gamma and the Poisson-lognormal for crash data modelling

Transportmetrica A: Transport Science, 2019
Several studies have shown that the Poisson-lognormal (PLN) offers a better alternative compared to the Poisson-gamma (PG) when data are skewed while the PG is a more reliable option otherwise.

Designing a phase‐III time‐to‐event clinical trial using a modified sample size formula and Poisson‐Gamma model for subject accrual that accounts for the lag in site initiation using the PERT distribution

Statistics in Medicine, 2023
A priori estimation of sample size and subject accrual in multi‐site, time‐to‐event clinical trials is often challenging. Such trials are powered based on the number of events needed to detect a clinically significant difference. Sample size based on number of events relates to the expected duration of observation time for each subject.

The logarithmic poisson gamma distribution: A model for leadtime demand

Naval Research Logistics Quarterly, 1982
AbstractThis paper considers an inventory system in which demand occurrences arise according to a stationary Poisson process, demand sizes at each occurrence follow a logarithmic distribution, and leadtimes are random variables with the gamma distribution.
