Polar Record, 2005
The ship that the oceanographer Dr William Speirs Bruce used on the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902–04, was originally a sealer named Hekla, built in Norway in 1872. In 1889 the Norwegian skipper Ragnvald Knudsen explored the northeast coast of Greenland between latitudes 74° and 75°, and in 1891–92 the ship was used by the Danish naval ...

FPDDet: An Efficient Rotated SAR Ship Detector Based on Simple Polar Encoding and Decoding
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2023In the task of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) ship detection, ship targets exhibit arbitrary orientations and are closely aligned. In recent years, oriented bounding box (OBB)-based detectors have gained attention as a solution to the significant overlap

Propulsion Technology for Polar Expedition Ships
OTC Arctic Technology Conference, 2018Abstract The cruise industry is seeking new markets and products to trigger a growing customer base around the world. As the more traditional cruise ships have become bigger and more geared towards mass tourism in typical locations like the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, there has also emerged a need for smaller niche type of cruises ...

Ship Detection Using Polarization Cross-Entropy
IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2009In this letter, polarization cross-entropy is introduced based on the eigendecomposition of the polarimetric coherence matrix. Then, the new parameter is employed for ship detection. From experimental results, it is derived that the distribution of the polarization cross-entropy in ocean regions can be well approximated by a generalized exponential ...
