The design of a photoelectric recording polarimeter using a cooled multiplier phototube and d.c. amplification is described. The extinction point of crossed Nicol prisms is recorded electronically for any desired wavelength. Continuous rotation through the extinction point is facilitated by synchronous motor drive for each wavelength.

The light beam to be analyzed propagates through a continuously rotating first-phase plate; then through a continuously rotating second-phase plate; and, passing through a stationary linear polarizer, is incident on a detector.

The Extreme Polarimeter (ExPo): design of a sensitive imaging polarimeter

This imaging polarimeter, developed at the Astronomical Institute of Utrecht University, aims to study circumstellar material at a contrast ratio with the central star of 10-9.

In PETRA the vertical beam polarization was measured using the following system: Circularly polarized photons are scattered by the electron beam. In the case of vertical polarization the vertical profile of the backscattered photons has asymmetries within an angle of 30 μrad.

Polarimetry for proton beams used at Fermilab, the Brookhaven AGS, and the FNAL polarized beam include Nuclear Magnetic resonance techniques, electromagnetic effects in pp and p–nucleus scattering, pion photoproduction, and analyzing power in e–p scattering. These and other techniques are in being considered for use at the SSC facility.

An Atomic Beam Source (ABS) injects an atomic hydrogen beam of high intensity and high proton polarization into a storage cell, made of thin aluminum and coated with Drifilm.
