After introducing perturbation terms to the Manakov equation to account for higher-order dispersion and for the Raman effect, we analyze polarization division multiplexing with subpicosecond solitons. Dispersion-shifted single-mode fibers operating at 1.55 /spl mu/m are considered.

Polarization-Division-Multiplexed Nonlinear Frequency Division Multiplexing

We experimentally demonstrate dual-polarization nonlinear frequency division multiplexing using the continuous spectrum in 1680 km of normal dispersion fiber at a burst rate of 128Gbit/s. The DGD penalties are shown to be negligible.

A compact silicon-on-insulator device used for conversions between polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and mode division multiplexing (MDM) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by utilizing a structure combining the improved two-dimensional grating coupler and two-mode multiplexer.

Incompatibility of polarization-division multiplexing with wavelength-division multiplexing in soliton-transmission systems

In a recent experiment it was demonstrated that polarization-division multiplexing was incompatible with wavelength-division multiplexing. We discuss a theoretical model that explains this result.
