Polarization-Insensitive Cross-Polarization Converter
IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 2021A transmission-type cross-polarization converter is designed based on a frequency selective surface (FSS) and is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The FSS structure is built up with rotationally asymmetric fourfold supercell. The subcell of each supercell is a monopole-via-monopole (MVM) module, which consists of a receiving monopole, a ...

Polarization-insensitive EDG demultiplexer combined with a polarization beam splitter
Optics Letters, 2023Polarization dependence is an inherent challenge for wavelength-division multiplexing transceivers on silicon photonic platforms, causing severe problems with polarization-dependent losses and hindering the implementation of monolithic integrated receivers. In this study, we developed a polarization-insensitive demultiplexer on a silicon nitride (Si3N4)

Polarization-insensitive optical amplifiers in AlInGaAs
IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2001We report the theoretical modeling and the fabrication of polarization-insensitive optical amplifiers at 1300 nm in AlInGaAs-InP material system. Gain calculations, using the k.p method, show that the introduction of 0.33% tensile strain into a three-quantum-well structure can achieve gain-matching over a wide energy spectrum.

Polarization insensitive terahertz metamaterial absorber
Optics Letters, 2011We present the simulation, implementation, and measurement of a polarization insensitive resonant metamaterial absorber in the terahertz region. The device consists of a metal/dielectric-spacer/metal structure allowing us to maximize absorption by varying the dielectric material and thickness and, hence, the effective electrical permittivity and ...

Wideband Coding Metamaterial with Polarization Insensitivity
2019 Computing, Communications and IoT Applications (ComComAp), 2019In this paper, a wideband coding metamaterial (CDM) is proposed for radar cross-section (RCS) Reduction. The proposed coding units have three advantages: (1) Simple design. Dual-polarized ‘0’ and ‘1’ coding elements (CEs) are realized by a pair of rectangle patch over 7-14.6 GHz (bandwidth 70%). The ‘0’ and ‘1’ CEs represent reflected phases 0° and 180°

Apart from gain dependence on polarization state, phase modulation in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is usually polarization dependent as a result of birefringence. This paper analyzes the factors that determine the polarization dependence of phase modulation and proposes the necessity of fabricating SOA with polarization-insensitive gain and ...

Polarization-insensitive photonic microwave downconversion
Optics Letters, 2013A polarization-insensitive photonic microwave downconverter is proposed and demonstrated, which is comprised of a polarization beam splitter, two Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs), and a balanced photodetector. By biasing the MZMs at the quadrature bias points with opposing modulation slopes, the performance of the proposed photonic microwave ...

Mid-infrared polarization-insensitive grating coupler
Optics Letters, 2022Mid-infrared (Mid-IR) (2–20 µm) silicon photonics has attracted much attention in the past few years due to its application potential in free-space optical communications, light detection and ranging, and molecular analysis. The grating coupler technology is one of the most widely employed approaches for light coupling between optical fibers and ...

The polarization dependence of phase modulation in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) has negative impacts on some pump/probe applications of SOAs. We propose the necessity of fabricating SOA with polarization-insensitive gain and polarization-insensitive phase modulation and study the possibility.
