Sex, flies and flower trap: Trapping trichomes and their function in pollination

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 10, Page 2261-2270, October 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Trapping trichomes, a common trait found in protogynous trap flowers, are thought to enable interaction with pollinators, promoting both pollen removal and fruit set. However, this hypothesis has yet to be empirically confirmed.

International Biological Flora: Ceratonia siliqua

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 8, Page 1885-1922, August 2024.
The carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) has a long traditional history in Mediterranean cultures providing food for humans and domestic animals. Its remarkable tolerance of drought, salt and fire, with an ability to thrive in poor, dry soils, makes it ideal for a warming Mediterranean climate.

The specialised buzz pollination syndrome poses a partial barrier to plant invasions

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 8, Page 1686-1700, August 2024.
We found that plants that exhibit traits consistent with the buzz‐pollination syndrome are underrepresented as invasive species across the globe. Our result suggests that the specialist buzz‐pollination syndrome poses a partial barrier to plant invasions. Our review also highlighted six alternative insect behaviours that can enable invasive plants with

Effect of green infrastructure on restoration of pollination networks and plant performance in semi‐natural dry grasslands across Europe

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 5, Page 1015-1028, May 2024.
Our findings provide evidence of the necessity to enhance ecosystem functions while avoiding biotic homogenisation. Restoration programs should aim at increasing landscape connectivity which influences plant communities, pollinator assemblages and their interaction patterns.

Landscape structure and farming management interacts to modulate pollination supply and crop production in blueberries

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 2, Page 281-291, February 2024.
Deployment of beehives in blueberry fields can buffer, but not compensate for the negative effects on honeybee abundance produced by surrounding large scale none‐flowering crops. Such compensation would require high‐quality beehives by monitoring their health and strength.
