2,2'‐Bipyridinylidenes are known for their “super‐electron‐donor” properties and have therefore been used beyond the field of organic synthesis. Their two‐electron redox process at a low potential of 1.8 V vs. Li/Li+ makes them attractive negative p‐type electrode‐active materials.

Once taxonomically debated, modern genetic and morphological analyses confirm its status as a distinct Pleistocene lineage restricted to the central‐southern Italian Peninsula and Sicily.
