Demographic History and Population Structure of Polistes fuscatus Paper Wasps [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Limited dispersal and cooperation are predicted to coevolve in cooperatively breeding systems. In Polistes paper wasps, mark-recapture studies and genetic analyses have shown that both cooperative and solitary nesting gynes can exhibit natal philopatry.

Exploring local attitudes towards current and potential future invasive wasp management in Aotearoa New Zealand

open access: yesKōtuitui: New Zealand Journal of Social Sciences Online, Volume 20, Issue 4, Page 639-656, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Social support for pest management programs is essential to their success. In this study, we explored stakeholder perceptions of current wasp management and what attempting eradication means for them. Local stakeholders involved in 7 conservation or pest management projects across Aotearoa New Zealand were interviewed.

Do Primitively Eusocial Wasps Use Queen Pheromones to Regulate Reproduction? A Case Study of the Paper Wasp Polistes satan

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2019
In several highly eusocial insect species with morphologically distinct castes, queen-characteristic cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) have been shown to act as queen signals that suppress the reproduction of nestmate workers.

Parasitic castration by Xenos vesparum depends on host gender [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Host castration represents a mechanism used by parasites to exploit energy resources from their hosts by interfering with their reproductive development or to extend host lifespan by removing risks associated with reproductive activity.

Alternative Nesting Strategies of Polistine Wasps in a Subtropical Locale

open access: yesInsects, 2022
Phylogenetic studies suggest that historically all paper wasps (Vespidae: Polistinae) in North America have tropical origins, but some species have adapted to survive temperate conditions.

Unveiling Wasps as Potential Pollinators: Floral Traits and Wasp Sociality Intensify Network Centrality in a Highly Diverse Tropical Ecosystem

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, Volume 149, Issue 10, Page 1520-1531, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Wasps, members of over 90 hymenopteran families, exhibit diverse behaviours, including pollination, predation and parasitism. While wasps are known pollinators in specialised systems, such as the intricate mutualism of fig trees and the deceptive pollination of certain orchids, they have historically been considered ineffective pollinators ...

Nesting Ecology of Polistes Species (hymenoptera, Vespidae) in Urban Areas of South-western Iberian Peninsula

open access: yes, 2020
Urbanization is increasing across the globe and it is recognized as a major factor affectingspecies, populations and assemblages. Although urbanization is recognized as a major threat to biodiversity, there is increasing evidence that urban habitats may ...

Insects as Food and Feed Source: A Comprehensive Review on Nutritional Value, Food Safety Concern, Environmental Benefits, Economic Potential, Technological Innovations, Challenges, and Future Prospects

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 6, Issue 6, Page 2591-2646, November 2025.
Edible insects offer a sustainable protein source, requiring fewer resources than traditional livestock. Despite challenges, they have the potential to enhance food security and sustainability for a growing global population. ABSTRACT As the world faces an escalating protein crisis amid climate change, population growth, and resource scarcity, edible ...
