Renaissance Studies, EarlyView.ABSTRACT Scholarly approaches to understanding freedom in Milton's prose tend to connect Milton's ideas to either liberalism or republicanism. Neither of these approaches is sufficient because freedom, for Milton, was not a single concept. Milton explored political and religious freedom very differently.

The Russian Review, EarlyView.Abstract This article analyzes the rebuses (picture riddles) of Anna Nikanorovna Paskhalova‐Mordovtseva. It argues that despite their seemingly modest nature as artefacts of everyday leisure, Mordovtseva used these puzzles to make radical claims and assert herself as a public intellectual.
