Keeping track of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes: New roles for farmers and naturalists in pollinator monitoring

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract The decline in biodiversity, particularly in agricultural landscapes, is a pressing global challenge. Monitoring is vital to assess biodiversity trends and conservation effectiveness, yet farmland remains underinvestigated. Engaging farmers and encouraging naturalists to take on new roles could help expand monitoring efforts and strengthen ...

Germination and storage of pollen

open access: yes
Germination of pear pollen markedly improved when boric acid was added to the medium. The pollen was more sensitive to boron in water than in 10 % sugar solution. Supplying weak solutions of boron to pear branches before flowering resulted in a good germination of the pollen in sugar solution without boron.

Long-Term Storage of Raspberry Pollen

open access: yesJournal of the American Pomological Society, 1983
Plant breeders are sometimes faced with the necessity of storing pollen for extended periods of time. When pollen is stored in such standard facilities as a refrigerator or home freezer, it remains viable for only a few weeks at best. The development of a reliable method to store pollen for extended periods would facilitate crosses among plant with ...

Application of pesticide combinations on watermelon affects pollen viability, germination, and storage

open access: yesJournal of Applied Biology & Biotechnology, 2019
To increase watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) production, pesticides are now being used in higher quantities. Many pesticide combinations are harmful to seed production.

Vitality and metabolic properties of binucleate and trinucleate pollen species upon dehiscence

open access: yes, 1979
Chapter 1Effects of various components upon germination in vitro were studied in order to develop an optimal germination medium for Compositae pollen.

Aspects of Orchid Conservation: Seed and Pollen Storage and their Value in Re-introduction Projects

open access: yes, 2015
Dry seeds of many orchid species, when stored at low temperatures, are capable of maintaining high levels of viability for many years, supporting orchid seed banking as a valuable part of emerging integrated conservation strategies.

Open‐land‐derived agroforestry and effects of abandonment of management of the main crop on ecosystem services and woody plant diversity

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Tropical forests are rapidly declining. One promising strategy to reverse the loss of tropical forest is the establishment of agroforestry on open land. We combined interviews with biodiversity surveys to learn general lessons from success and nonsuccess stories of the establishment of open‐land‐derived coffee agroforests in one of the world's ...

Factors Influencing Date Pollen Viability

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural and Marine Sciences, 1997
Pollen of seven date cultivars was stored at 4.5 -5.0'C using desiccator with or without silica gel and in vials outside the desicator as a control. Germination percentage was determined microscopically with a hemacytometer after harvest and at three and

Room-Temperature Storage of Coconut Pollen [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1962
POLLEN introduction and exchange have been suggested as a means of broadening the scope of breeding programmes designed to produce disease-resistant and high-yielding coconuts1–3; and at a recent meeting of the Food and Agriculture Organization Technical Working Party on Coconut Production it was stressed4 that the most important material question to ...

Comparison of 5 Pollen Storage Protocols for Subtropical Pine Species

open access: yes, 2005
Storage of pine pollen for breeding and conservation purposes is essential to conserve valuable genetic material over time. Customized storage protocols are often necessary to address differing strategies and program goals for specific pine species ...
