Hemp Cultivation and Crop Diversification: Implications for Ecosystem Services in Kentucky

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study examines the ecosystem benefits of expanding hemp cultivation by assessing its impact on crop diversity. Using scenario‐based simulations and fixed‐effect panel regressions with county‐level data in Kentucky, we find that increased hemp acreage tends to enhance crop diversity, improving water quality and bird diversity.

Regional Differences in U.S. Consumer Preferences for Native Woody Shrubs With Varying Aesthetic Characteristics

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Native plants offer a variety of aesthetic (e.g., fall colour, fruit, flowers) and functional benefits (e.g., pollinator friendly, wildlife friendly, water management). How these benefits influence consumer choice and perceived value of native versus introduced plants is not well understood.

The C-type lectin AcCTL5 from Apis cerana mediates anti-Nosema ceranae defense via agglutination and hemolymph melanization

open access: yesVirulence
Unlike vertebrates, which use adaptive immunity, insects depend on humoral and cellular innate immunity to resist pathogens, with pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) like C-type lectins (CTLs) critical for recognizing pathogen-associated molecular ...

The Pollination of the Olive [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1908
As Knuth's great work on flower pollination, compiled from all available sources, says nothing whatever about the olive, I recently asked Prof. J. E. Coit, of Arizona, to look out for insects upon the flowers. He carefully examined many olive trees in flower at Tucson, and did not find a single insect at the flowers, with the exception of a thrips ...

Advancing European Plant Variety Registration: Data‐Driven Insights and Stakeholder Perspectives

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Efficient plant variety registration is crucial for fostering innovation in the European Union, yet the current regulatory framework is complex and faces calls for reform. This study provides data‐driven evidence to inform the ongoing legislative debate by employing a mixed‐methods approach.

Uncovering renewable energy policy impact channels on land values, the local farm structure, and farmland heterogeneity

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Germany's Renewable Energy Sources Act (REA), enacted in 2000 and subsequently amended, subsidized national renewable energy production with fixed feed‐in tariffs for renewable energy sources (RE) from wind, solar, and biogas. Empirical studies suggest that the policy was creating windfall effects for landowners and attribute farmland use ...

Multidimensional Profiling of Senescence in Eastern Honey Bee, Apis cerana (Hymenoptera: Apidae), Workers: Morphology, Microstructure, and Transcriptomics

open access: yesInsects
Worker honey bees are crucial for colony stability and ecosystem pollination. However, the cross-scale aging features and underlying mechanisms in the Eastern honey bee (Apis cerana) remain poorly understood.
