種々の倍率に延伸したナイロン6モノフィラメントを用いて, 膨潤による直径変化と配向の関係を調べ, 次の結果を得た。1) 未延伸試料を除き, 試料の直径は膨潤の初期においてわずかに増加し, 水分率1~1.5%以上になるといったん減少して, 膨潤前よりも細くなる。そして徐々に増加して, 平衡値に達する。2) 膨潤の途中で起こる上述の直径減少は, 延伸比2.5の試料で最も著しい。3) 膨潤平衡に達したときの直径の増加は, 延伸比2.5で極小となる。これらの結果から, 非晶部分が折りたたみ構造からふさ状ミセル構造へ移行し, その途中で不安定な構造を経るような延伸機構を論じた。
