Purification of polybrominated biphenyl congeners

A commercial preparation of polybrominated biphenyls (Firemaster BP-6) was fractionated by preferential acetone solubilization and a number of PBB congeners were purified from the resulting fractions by repeated recrystallization, alumina adsorption column chromatography, and reversed-phase Lipidex-500 column chromatography.

The accumulation of polybrominated biphenyls by fish

In contrast to bromobiphenyls with up to 4 bromine atoms, which resemble quite closely the corresponding chlorobiphenyls, the more substituted bromobiphenyls are less accumulated by fish from water than the corresponding PCB's, represented by Aroclor 1254.

Retention and excretion of polybrominated biphenyls by hens

The retention and elimination of PBB by hens are qualitatively similar to those of PCBs and chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides. Steady-state level in eggs was about the same as the level in the diet, and after 63 days the level in body fat was about 4 times the level in diet.

Effects of Polybrominated Biphenyls on the Excretion of Steroids

When polybrominated biphenyls (fireMaster BP-6, PBB) are ingested by cattle, they have been shown to alter hepatic enzyme systems, and produce renal lesions with chronic high exposure. These changes provide mechanisms for alteration of the metabolism and clearance of steroid hormones that might then affect reproductive function.

Exposure to Polybrominated Biphenyls

Twenty-one persons exposed to polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) were compared with hospital volunteers on a battery of tests measuring memory, motor strength and coordination, cortical-sensory perception, personality, and higher cognitive functioning. Patients exposed to PBB were selected for this study only if they had persistent medical complaints.

Polybrominated biphenyl toxicosis in the rat and mouse

Abstract Rats and mice were given 22 oral doses of Firemaster FF-1 or pure 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexabromobiphenyl (HBB) over a 30-day period and held for 90 additional days to determine the pathobiological manifestations of toxicity. Female mice and rats given Firemaster FF-1 became porphyric after 45 and 120 days, respectively.

The comparative biologic and toxic potencies of polychlorinated biphenyls and polybrominated biphenyls

Aroclor 1254 and fireMaster BP-6, two commercial polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) preparations, exhibit comparable biologic and toxic effects. In the present study the commercial PBB was more active than Aroclor 1254 in causing thymic atrophy in male Wistar rats.
