Polychrome Sculpture in Early Modern Spain

Polychrome sculpture forms a cornerstone of the religious art produced in Spain in the early modern period. During the 16th century a single piece of wood was often used and during the 17th century wood sections were joined together with nails or dowels. Abstract This article presents the theory and processes of three‐dimensional (3D) visualisation and virtual restoration applied to St Christopher, a Late Gothic polychrome sculpture in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, UK. Historical and technical analysis of the polychromy allows decisions to be made on possible original appearance.

Fungal deterioration of a Jesuit South American polychrome wood sculpture

Pigment samples obtained from a South American Jesuit wooden sculpture housed at the Museum of Natural Sciences in La Plata, Buenos Aires province, Argentina, were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis and infrared spectroscopy.

Protein determination in polychromed stone sculptures, stuccoes and gesso grounds

Abstract Various procedures were used to extract and determine proteinaceous material from artificial specimens and samples taken from works of art. Polychromed stone sculptures (twelfth-thirteenth century), the gesso ground from a wooden statue (fifteenth century), fresco plasters (sixteenth century) and stuccoes of various ages were examined.
