Towards the theory of hardness of materials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Recent studies showed that hardness, a complex property, can be calculated using very simple approaches or even analytical formulae. These form the basis for evaluating controversial experimental results (as we illustrate for TiO2-cotunnite) and enable a

Functional Persistent Luminescent Thin Films and Glasses: Materials, Processing, and Future Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, Volume 14, Issue 16, 24 April 2026.
Beyond conventional powders, persistent luminescent thin films and glass‐based composites offer transformative potential for transparent, stable photonic devices. This work evaluates diverse processing routes and structure‐property correlations essential for achieving optical transparency and environmental stability.

On the Choice of Tool Material in Friction Stir Welding of Titanium Alloys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid state welding process patented in 1991 by TWI; initially adopted to weld aluminum alloys, is now being successfully used also for magnesium alloys, copper and steels.

Cutting Performance and Wear/Damage Characteristics of PCBN Tool in Hard Milling

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
In the intermittent machining of hardened steel for the die and mold industry, determining how to reduce the wear of PCBN (Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride) tools and improve their machining efficiency and quality is an important subject.

Correlation of ideal and actual shear strengths of metals with their friction properties [PDF]

open access: yes
The relation between the ideal and actual shear strengths and friction properties of clean metals in contact with clean diamond, boron nitride, silicon carbide, manganese-zinc ferrite, and the metals themselves in vacuum is discussed.

Fabrication of AlN/BN bishell hollow nanofibers by electrospinning and atomic layer deposition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Aluminum nitride (AlN)/boron nitride (BN) bishell hollow nanofibers (HNFs) have been fabricated by successive atomic layer deposition (ALD) of AlN and sequential chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of BN on electrospun ...

Pressure‐Induced Structural and Magnetic Evolution in Layered Antiferromagnet YbMn2Sb2

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, Volume 12, Issue 8, 20 April 2026.
Pressure tunes the delicate balance between structure, magnetism, and electronic states in quantum materials. In YbMn2Sb2, high‐pressure X‐ray and neutron diffraction reveal a trigonal‐to‐monoclinic transition near 3.5 GPa, accompanied by unconventional magnetic ordering.

Molecular Memory with Atomically-Smooth Graphene Contacts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We report the use of bilayer graphene as an atomically-smooth contact for nanoscale devices. A two-terminal Bucky ball (C60) based molecular memory is fabricated with bilayer graphene as a contact on the polycrystalline nickel electrode.

Tribological properties of boron nitride synthesized by ion beam deposition [PDF]

open access: yes
The adhesion and friction behavior of boron nitride films on 440 C bearing stainless steel substrates was examined. The thin films containing the boron nitride were synthesized using an ion beam extracted from a borazine plasma.
