Thermal effects on tribological behaviors of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride

Ceramics International, 2021
Abstract In order to understand the thermal damage mechanisms of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN) under elevated temperature and the following influences on its tribological behaviors, the physicochemical characteristic of annealed PcBN under various temperatures was investigated by X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy and energy

Superhard transparent polycrystalline cubic boron nitride

Applied Physics Letters, 2021
Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN) has been synthesized at 14 GPa and high temperatures of 1300–2000 °C in a two-stage multi-anvil cell. Sintered PcBN synthesized at 1700–1800 °C and 14 GPa with a grain size of ∼200 nm is optically transparent with a transmittance of ∼70% at wavelengths of 400–1500 nm and has the Vickers hardness of ∼63–69 GPa.

Raman and photoluminescence spectra of indented cubic boron nitride and polycrystalline cubic boron nitride

Diamond and Related Materials, 2000
Abstract The use of Raman spectroscopy, and in particular Raman line shifts, to measure stress in diamond and nitrides such as gallium nitride (GaN), is well known. In both diamond and GaN the application is principally to study stresses in thin films and at the substrate–thin film interface.

Properties and Performance of Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride

International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology, 2015
Cubic boron nitride ( CBN ) is a lightweight (ρ = 3.45 g/cm 3 ) ceramic material that is harder than all materials except diamond. As harder ceramics tend to perform better as armor, this material is of interest to the military community.

Diamond deposition on polycrystalline films of cubic boron nitride

Applied Physics Letters, 1993
We have grown diamond films on films of cubic boron nitride (cBN). The cBN films were grown on Si(100) substrates using ion-assisted pulsed laser deposition. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that the BN films contained ∼75% sp3-bonded cBN.

Development of matrix microstructure in polycrystalline cubic boron nitride ceramics

Journal of the European Ceramic Society, 2017
Abstract The development of matrix microstructure in polycrystalline cubic boron nitride cutting tool materials has been investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning and transmission electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry.

Synthesis and characterization of polycrystalline sintered compacts of cubic boron nitride

Journal of Materials Science, 1986
Synthetic cubic boron nitride (CBN) compacts are an important tool material used extensively for the machining of hardened steels. The paper describes work on the synthesis and characterization of CBN compacts. A 200 tonne cubic press has been used for the generation of high pressures.

Optimization of machining of automotive components with polycrystalline cubic boron nitride

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2008
While superhard cutting tools are being used increasingly in automotive plants worldwide, their adoption within the automotive supply chain is not universal. Important issues relating to successful implementation of superhard cutting tool materials in such applications include the ageing effect of grey iron, proper edge preparation of the cutting ...

Electrical properties of Be-implanted polycrystalline cubic boron nitride films

Applied Physics Letters, 2008
P -type conductivity of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (cBN) films was achieved by implantation of beryllium ions. The effects of implantation doses and annealing on the phase composition and electrical properties of cBN films were studied. A reduction in resistivity by seven orders of magnitude was observed.
