Raman and photoluminescence spectra of indented cubic boron nitride and polycrystalline cubic boron nitride

Diamond and Related Materials, 2000
Abstract The use of Raman spectroscopy, and in particular Raman line shifts, to measure stress in diamond and nitrides such as gallium nitride (GaN), is well known. In both diamond and GaN the application is principally to study stresses in thin films and at the substrate–thin film interface.

Properties and Performance of Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride

International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology, 2015
Cubic boron nitride ( CBN ) is a lightweight (ρ = 3.45 g/cm 3 ) ceramic material that is harder than all materials except diamond. As harder ceramics tend to perform better as armor, this material is of interest to the military community.

Diamond deposition on polycrystalline films of cubic boron nitride

Applied Physics Letters, 1993
We have grown diamond films on films of cubic boron nitride (cBN). The cBN films were grown on Si(100) substrates using ion-assisted pulsed laser deposition. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that the BN films contained ∼75% sp3-bonded cBN.

Synthesis and characterization of polycrystalline sintered compacts of cubic boron nitride

Journal of Materials Science, 1986
Synthetic cubic boron nitride (CBN) compacts are an important tool material used extensively for the machining of hardened steels. The paper describes work on the synthesis and characterization of CBN compacts. A 200 tonne cubic press has been used for the generation of high pressures.

Electrical properties of Be-implanted polycrystalline cubic boron nitride films

Applied Physics Letters, 2008
P -type conductivity of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (cBN) films was achieved by implantation of beryllium ions. The effects of implantation doses and annealing on the phase composition and electrical properties of cBN films were studied. A reduction in resistivity by seven orders of magnitude was observed.

Optimization of machining of automotive components with polycrystalline cubic boron nitride

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2008
While superhard cutting tools are being used increasingly in automotive plants worldwide, their adoption within the automotive supply chain is not universal. Important issues relating to successful implementation of superhard cutting tool materials in such applications include the ageing effect of grey iron, proper edge preparation of the cutting tools,

Picosecond laser processing of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride — A method to examine the ablation behavior of a high cubic boron nitride content grade material

open access: yesJournal of Laser Applications, 2016
Chipping of hardened steel is often performed by the use of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN). Moreover, PCBN tools are also suitable for many machining tasks with a lower degree of specialization, due to their excellent mechanical properties ...

Influence of sintering conditions on the properties of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride

Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics, 1986
For the purpose of a further study of the sintering process of beta-BN grains into polycrystalline compacts, a study was made of the influence of sintering temperature and grain size on the microstructure, width of the x-ray diffraction lines, and certain physical properties of polycrystalline specimens of beta-BN. Sintering of beta-BN grains occurs in

The influence of microstructure on the fracture properties of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride

Computational Materials Science, 2015
Abstract The effect of microstructure on the fracture properties of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN) for industrial applications has been investigated numerically using the finite volume method. Representative synthetic microstructures have been created using a modified Voronoi tessellation procedure and these have been implemented in a ...

Structurization of single-phase polycrystalline materials based on cubic boron nitride

Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics, 1987
The authors study the crystallization of cubic boron nitrides by means of transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction and the effects on crystal structure and microstructure of sintering, compacting, and heat treatment. Their results establish that the structurization of the nitrides is determined by structural phase transformations ...
