Polycystic Kidneys in a Pigeon
Avian Diseases, 1984Polycystic kidneys have been reported in association with renal disease or as incidental necropsy findings in several species (1,2,7,8,10,11,14,21). Polycystic kidneys can be clinically significant in humans (4,11) and economically significant in swine (21). Several types of congenital and adult forms of renal cysts have been described (3,11).

It is not uncommon for urologists to be involved in the care of patients with either adult polycystic kidney disease or horseshoe kidney. Personal clinical experience indicates that it is most unusual to have these 2 congenital disorders simultaneously in the same patient.

Therapeutic embolization of polycystic kidneys [PDF]
In two patients with end-stage polycystic kidneys suffering from severe and protracted hematuria recourse was made to therapeutic renal embolization. Hematuria stopped immediately, never to appear again, whilst recanalization of the arterial renal circulation was observed later.

Polycystic kidney diseases are inherited renal disorders due mainly to mutations in genes that regulate the development and function of cells that line renal tubules. This review outlines the clinical importance of polycystic kidney diseases and discusses the cell biology and molecular mechanisms that cause the formation of hundreds of cystic lesions ...

A 42-year-old woman presented for additional evaluation of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). She was initially diagnosed with ADPKD at age 36 after developing fever and flank pain. At that time, ultrasonography showed bilateral renal cysts, and liver and ovarian cysts. The serum creatinine level was normal.
