Interdiffusion in Polyelectrolyte Multilayers
Macromolecules, 2010Using neutron reflectivity, the internal structure of polyelectrolyte multilayers is described on the nanoscale. Each film consists of a protonated and a deuterated block, built from x protonated and y deuterated polycation/polyanion bilayers, respectively.

POLYELECTROLYTE MULTILAYERS AND THEIR INTERACTIONS
Journal of Adhesion, 2004An overview is given of our recent IR spectroscopic, optical, electrokinetic, and microscopic studies on polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs), built up using the consecutive layer-by-layer technique, their interactions, and application possibilities. The influence of pH on the deposition of PEMs consisting of commercial polyelectrolytes (PELs) like poly ...

AbstractMultifunctional polyelectrolyte (or layer‐by‐layer, LbL) multilayers consisting of a set of nanocompartments separated by impermeable ultrathin barriers, whereby the thickness of the compartments is tuned in the range 1–10 nm, are synthesized.

Monocyte activation on polyelectrolyte multilayers
Journal of Biomaterials Science, Polymer Edition, 2005The adherence and activation of primary human monocytes was investigated on a polyelectrolyte multilayer film containing hyaluronic acid (HA) and poly-L-lysine (PLL). The sequential layer-by-layer deposition of the multilayer film was characterized by surface plasmon resonance.

Formation and Stability of Multilayers of Polyelectrolytes
Langmuir, 1996Sequential addition of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes may lead to the formation of multilayers at a solid surface. The buildup of such multilayers is characterized by a stepwise increase of the adsorbed amount and layer thickness and by alternating highly positive and highly negative values for the ζ-potential.

Loading of Curcumin in Polyelectrolyte Multilayers
Langmuir, 2010Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) thin films prepared using the layer-by-layer technique are proposed as a matrix for the immobilization of 1,7-bis-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene-2,5-dione (curcumin), a lipophilic model drug. The PEM assembly was based on the layer-by-layer deposition of cationic poly(diallyldimethyl-ammonium chloride ...

Polyelectrolyte Multilayers on Weak Polyelectrolyte Brushes
Macromolecular Rapid Communications, 2003AbstractThe interaction of surface‐attached weak polyelectrolyte brushes, grown directly from the surface of a solid substrate by surface‐initiated polymerization, with weak polyelectrolyte molecules in solution is studied. In addition, the formation of PEL multilayers onto such brush substrates is investigated. A strong template effect is observed and

Interaction and Adhesion Properties of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers
Langmuir, 2005The growth, morphology, and interaction/adhesion properties of supported poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PSS/PAH) and DNA/PAH multilayers were investigated by means of surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging, and AFM-related force measurements.

Salt Softening of Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Capsules
Langmuir, 2005The changes in the morphology and the mechanical properties of hollow polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules made from poly(styrenesulfonate)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) in response to added salt were investigated. We found that capsules shrink in response to salt exposure.

Retrospective on the Future of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers
Langmuir, 2009The layer-by-layer, or multilayer, method of thin film growth has evolved into a widely-used enabling technology. Starting in the mid 1990's, an exponentially increasing number of publications on the topic, many appearing in this Journal, have shown how multilayers may be adapted to passive and active coatings, devices and architectures.
