The Polyethylene History

2005
Our understanding of the wear behavior of polyethylene (PE) components has deepened over the past few years as the adverse effects of gamma irradiation (in air) sterilization have become understood. This understanding has led to methods to improve the wear performance of the polymer using cross-linking.

Polyethylene Wear

1999
Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) possesses a unique blend of toughness, wear resistance, and biocompatibility.1,2 It has been the articular-bearing surface of choice against metal or ceramic since 1962.3 To date, it is still the best polymer available for joint implant use.4 However, with respect to long-term function and durability ...

Prevention and mitigation of polyethylene and hydrocarbon/polyethylene explosions

2008
A discussion covers the importance of the prevention and mitigation of dust and hybrid mixture explosions; the use of the inherent safety principle of moderation to achieve a degree of explosion risk reduction; use of a test matrix composed of various size fractions of polyethylene powder and concentrations of hydrocarbon gas (ethylene, hexane, and ...

Fractionation of polyethylene

Journal of Polymer Science, 1959
AbstractA procedure and apparatus are described for the large scale (50‐gram) fractionation of high‐density polyethylene by Desreaux's fractional extraction technique. Two samples of Ziegler polyethylene were fractionated by this technique and the intrinsic viscosity in decalin at 135°C.
