Sustainable Processing of Deep-Sea Polymetallic Nodules

2017
The possibility of commercialization of processing technology for sea nodules has been linked with comparisons with similar terrestrial process operations. In addition to techno-economic viability, an added focus to commercialization is the sustainability of the process route. The general context of sustainability is discussed.

Impacts of Mining Polymetallic Nodules on Surface Seawater and Marine Picophytoplankton

Environmental Science & Technology
Polymetallic nodules' (PMNs) deep-sea mining poses risks to marine ecosystems, yet its effects on surface picophytoplankton remain unclear. This study assessed metal release from PMNs and its impact on picophytoplankton in the Clarion-Clipperton zone through laboratory and field incubation experiments.

Polymetallic nodule mining: innovative concepts for commercialisation [PDF]

open access: possible, 2012
Seabed resources of value to the modern economy include oil and gas reserves, placerdeposits including diamonds and gold, and minerals found in the form of Seafloor MassiveSulfides, Sediments, Crusts and Polymetallic (Manganese) Nodules.A review of the published literature from previous research studies and field trials indicates that polymetallic ...

Estimation of Polymetallic Nodule Abundance Based on Seafloor Photography

Journal of Marine Environmental Engineering
In this study, we aim to enhance the precision of estimating polymetallic nodule resources in the Western Pacific Ocean by employing a traditional deep-sea camera method supported by sampling. A series of image pre-processing techniques are applied, and an equation is developed to determine the weight and surface area of the nodules.

Megabenthic ecology of abyssal polymetallic nodule fields [PDF]

open access: possible, 2019
Abyssal polymetallic nodule fields constitute an unusual deep-sea habitat. The mix of soft sediment and the hard substratum provided by nodules increases the complexity of these environments, and is thought to promote the occurrence of some of the most biologically diverse seafloor assemblages in the abyss.

Technical and Economy Study of Polymetallic Nodules Seabed Mining

2014
At present there are many proposals on individual technical devices suitable for deep-sea mining of polymetallic nodules. Now is the time to define elements of the system of mining. The structure of such a system may consist of one or more vessels at the sea level, one or more mining collectors moving on the ocean floor, buffers, and vertical pipes and
