Larval assemblages over the abyssal plain in the Pacific are highly diverse and spatially patchy [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2019
Abyssal plains are among the most biodiverse yet least explored marine ecosystems on our planet, and they are increasingly threatened by human impacts, including future deep seafloor mining.

Responses of an abyssal meiobenthic community to short-term burial with crushed nodule particles in the south-east Pacific [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2019
Increasing industrial metal demands due to rapid technological developments may drive the prospection and exploitation of deep-sea mineral resources such as polymetallic nodules.

Slurry electrolysis of ocean polymetallic nodule

open access: yesTransactions of Nonferrous Metals Society of China, 2010
Abstract The ocean poly-metallic nodule was leached by using slurry electrolysis process in HCl-NaCl medium. The leaching rates of Mn, Co, Cu and Ni in the ocean poly-metallic nodule are all above 97%. Meanwhile, the high purity of electrolytic MnO 2 is also obtained as an anode product.

Anomalous oxygen concentration increases in benthic experiments from the Clarion Clipperton Zone are not related to polymetallic nodules [version 1; peer review: 2 approved, 1 not approved]

open access: yesF1000Research
* Background Polymetallic nodules in the deep sea of the Clarion Clipperton zone (CCZ) have been implicated in the abiotic production of oxygen during benthic chamber respirometer experiments.

Equity Interest Scheme in Polymetallic Nodules Deep Seabed Mining: The Positives and Negatives

open access: yesJurnal Media Hukum, 2022
UNCLOS 1982 initially obliged all applicants to submit a reserved area when applying for exploration activities in the Area. Such provisions were derogated when the equity interest scheme was introduced in the exploration regulations for polymetallic ...

Subsea Nodule Recognition and Deployment Detection Method Based on Improved YOLOv8s

open access: yesIEEE Access
An improved small-target detection model based on YOLOv8s is proposed to address the challenges associated with deep-sea polymetallic nodule detection, such as complex target shapes, small sizes, and strong environmental interference.

Cautionary Tales for Science‐Based Policy in Deep‐Sea Mining Governance

open access: yesGlobal Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article examines how low‐certainty scientific claims permeate high‐stakes policy debates before rigorous validation. Using deep‐sea mining governance as a focal domain, the study traces high‐visibility narratives, including the “dark oxygen” hypothesis, radioactive risks of polymetallic nodules, projected impacts of sediment plume ...
