The autoimmune peripheral neuropathies with prominent motor manifestations are a diverse collection of unusual peripheral neuropathies that are appreciated in vast clinical settings. This chapter highlights the most common immune-mediated, motor predominant neuropathies excluding acute, and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy ...

SummaryA clinical material is presented consisting of 43 children below 17 years of age with evidence of impaired function of peripheral nerves. One case occurred in a newborn with muscular hypotonia, weakness and areflexia: Thirteen children had signs of an affection also of the central nervous system.

Pain can complicate a diverse group of peripheral neuropathies. A number of potential mechanisms have been proposed, but available data are inadequate to posit any pathogenesis with certainty. In most cases, knowledge of the clinical findings associated with the various syndromes permits an etiologic diagnosis, which, in turn, may suggest a primary ...

Polyneuropathies in paediatrics
European Journal of Pediatrics, 1990Non-acute polyneuropathies (PNPs) encountered in paediatrics are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on three main groups of conditions: the relatively rare but treatable dysimmune PNP (chronic relapsing dysimmune polyneuropathies, CRDP); the more common hereditary motor/sensory neuropathies (HMSN and HSN); and the often missed symptomatic neuropathies of ...

Two groups of alcoholics (30 patients each)--identified by the MALT score--were examined. Clinical and laboratory investigations showed no connection between thiamine, riboflavin, or Vitamin B6 deficiency and development of the polyneuropathy. Neither the polyneuropathy nor the diminished sensory conduction velocity were related to malnutrition.

Polyneuropathies of cats have a variety of clinical presentations. Areflexic flaccid quadriparesis, or quadriplegia, progressing over a 24– to 48–hour period, may be associated with polyneuropathies, as can chronic insidiously progressive tremors and muscle weakness that wax and wane or progress slowly over weeks or months, and which can go undiagnosed

Polyneuropathy in paraproteinaemia
Journal of Neurology, 1985Paraproteinaemias are frequently associated with peripheral neuropathies. "Benign" paraproteinaemia, myeloma and Waldenströms macroglobulinaemia may present clinically as polyneuropathy. Therefore immunoelectrophoresis is strongly recommended in the routine diagnosis of polyneuropathies of unknown origin.

Polyneuropathy is an uncommon neurologic disorder that occurs in childhood. An evaluation of 61 patients over a period of seven years showed the Guilain-Barré syndrome and degenerative polyneuropathies to be the most common diagnoses. Other etiologies included metabolic, toxic, and neuropathies associated with systemic diseases.

[Guideline on polyneuropathy].
Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, 2007In the Netherlands, approximately 100,000-400,000 people suffer from polyneuropathy. Polyneuropathy has many different causes, diabetes mellitus being the most frequent one.
