A Comprehensive Comparison of Insulation Materials for Timber Building Systems

open access: yesEnergies
The key objectives of both European Union and Portuguese policies are energy efficiency and carbon neutrality in the building sector. Timber construction offers unique advantages in achieving these goals, such as increased productivity through faster and

Electroactive Liquid Crystal Elastomers as Soft Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electroactive liquid crystal elastomers (eLCEs) can be actuated via electromechanical, electrochemical, or electrothermal effects. a) Electromechanical effects include Maxwell stress, electrostriction, and the electroclinic effect. b) Electrochemical effects arise from electrode redox reactions.

PEDOT‐Based Eutectogel Electrode Arrays for Enhanced High‐Resolution Electrogastrography: Fabrication, Stability, and Wearable Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Here, we present a high‐density PEDOT eutectogel electrode array for enhanced body surface gastric mapping. Silver electrodes are blade‐coated onto flexible substrates, followed by electrogelation of PEDOT:PSS and the deposition of a PEDOT:LS eutectogel.

A toolbox for parameter-free predictions of solid-state properties of monodisperse glassy polymers with frozen-in molecular orientation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A toolbox that allows designers to predict the properties of oriented glassy polymers using only existing material constants is constructed from a constitutive model applicable to both polymer solids and polymer melts.

Trap‐Modified Inverted Organic Photodetectors via Layer‐by‐Layer Processing with Poly(N‐vinylcarbazole) Additives

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Trap state engineering in inverted organic photodetectors (OPDs) is achieved via combined layer‐by‐layer (LbL) processing and poly(N‐vinylcarbazole) (PVK) incorporation. LbL reduces the trap density while PVK additives gradually shift trap states from shallow band‐edge to deep mid‐gap levels, tailoring the energy distribution.

Ingestion of microplastics during chewing gum consumption

open access: yesJournal of Hazardous Materials Letters
Chewing gums typically contain plant-based or synthetic plastic polymers to improve their texture and flavor retention. These polymer fragments or microplastics can be released into the environment when disposed of improperly or ingested while chewing ...

A polystyrene-water calorimeter [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Journal of Applied Radiation and Isotopes, 1983
The paper describes a new type of calorimeter that can be quickly put into operation for determining absorbed dose at a point in polystyrene. It also describes a unique method of decreasing drifts in electrical signals caused by temperature gradients. Two calibrated thermistors were placed close together between sandwiched polystyrene discs that were ...

Mechanotransducing Organic Electrochemical Diode for Crosstalk‐Inhibited Artificial Skin

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach is presented to a stretchable mechanotransducing diode that unifies rectification and tactile‐sensing functionality. This approach enables to fabricate the diode that maintains a large rectification ratio (5 × 102) at a high operational frequency (100 Hz).
