Monitoring polymer flocculation in oil sands tailings: A population balance model approach
Chemical Engineering Journal, 2018Oil sands mature fine tailings are stable suspensions of clay particles and residual bitumen in an alkaline aqueous medium. They are formed when bitumen is extracted from oil sands using the Clark hot water process. Polymer flocculants are widely used to

A population balance model for fish population dynamics
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1979Abstract A population balance model of fish population dynamics for batch systems was developed. A growth rate expression was introduced and coupled with the population balance. Solutions of the model provide predictions of such fish size distribution characteristics as average size, standard deviation and coefficient of variation.

SINCE at least 1929 it has been commonplace for demographers to use a threefold classification with which to categorize the world's populations.1 To use Notestein's descriptive titles for these, they are (1) Incipient Decline, (2) Transitional Growth, and (3) High Growth Potential.2 This mode of thinking assumes a series of related trends within both ...

In Chapter 7, cell population balances are written in terms of a distribution of mass fractions of the total biomass. This allows a direct combination of intracellularly structured models and population models. However, the population balances based on mass fractions do not permit the incorporation into the model of specific events in the cell cycle ...

Spatially Balanced Sampling of Continuous Populations
Scandinavian Journal of Statistics, 2018AbstractWhen sampling from a continuous population (or distribution), we often want a rather small sample due to some cost attached to processing the sample or to collecting information in the field. Moreover, a probability sample that allows for design‐based statistical inference is often desired.

Balanced Rhinoplasty in an Oriental Population
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 2007In Taiwan, augmentation rhinoplasty and double-eyelid blepharoplasty are the most popular aesthetic procedures. Although aesthetic concepts vary for different races, the current concept of nasal and facial beauty shows a tendency to correspond to that for white people. The authors present their 10-year experience with a simple and practical approach of

Population Balance Modeling of Antibodies Aggregation Kinetics
The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2012The aggregates morphology and the aggregation kinetics of a model monoclonal antibody under acidic conditions have been investigated. Growth occurs via irreversible cluster-cluster coagulation forming compact, fractal aggregates with fractal dimension of 2.6.

Population balancing with species switching
Journal of the Korean Physical Society, 2014Biological organisms are composed of cells differentiated from stem cells. Emerging evidence suggests phenotypic switches of differentiated cells, called transdifferentiation, during development and under pathophysiological conditions. To examine the role of transdifferentiation for population balances, we construct a stochastic model mapped into urn ...
