Galactic civilizations: Population dynamics and interstellar diffusion [PDF]

open access: yes
The interstellar diffusion of galactic civilizations is reexamined by potential theory; both numerical and analytical solutions are derived for the nonlinear partial differential equations which specify a range of relevant models, drawn from blast wave ...

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

Spatiotemporal analysis of the structure and genetic diversity of Stemphylium vesicarium populations in New York onion fields

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
Stemphylium leaf blight (SLB), caused by the hemibiotrophic fungus, Stemphylium vesicarium, is the dominant foliar disease affecting onions in New York (NY), USA.

Tumor and germline testing with next generation sequencing in epithelial ovarian cancer: a prospective paired comparison using an 18‐gene panel

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Genetic testing in epithelial ovarian cancer includes both germline and tumor‐testing. This approach often duplicates resources. The current prospective study assessed the feasibility of tumor‐first multigene testing by comparing tumor tissue with germline testing of peripheral blood using an 18‐gene NGS panel in 106 patients.

Phytophthora cinnamomi Populations Affecting Avocado in California Show Low Differentiation, Phenotypic Variability, and Introductions from Mexico

open access: yesMolecular Plant-Microbe Interactions
Phytophthora root rot (PRR), caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi, is one of the most devastating avocado diseases worldwide. We previously reported a group of genetically distinct, more virulent, and less fungicide-sensitive isolates corresponding to the A2

Screening for lung cancer: A systematic review of overdiagnosis and its implications

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Low‐dose computed tomography (CT) screening for lung cancer may increase overdiagnosis compared to no screening, though the risk is likely low versus chest X‐ray. Our review of 8 trials (84 660 participants) shows added costs. Further research with strict adherence to modern nodule management strategies may help determine the extent to which ...

Glycosylated LGALS3BP is highly secreted by bladder cancer cells and represents a novel urinary disease biomarker

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Urinary LGALS3BP is elevated in bladder cancer patients compared to healthy controls as detected by the 1959 antibody–based ELISA. The antibody shows enhanced reactivity to the high‐mannose glycosylated variant secreted by cancer cells treated with kifunensine (KIF).
