A Population Survey on Bone Mineral Density in a Fishing Village in Wakayama Prefecture. (Part 1). Distribution of Bone Mineral Density by Sex and Age Based on a Representative Sample of the Community.

open access: yesNippon Eiseigaku Zasshi (Japanese Journal of Hygiene), 1996
To establish reference values for bone mineral density (BMD), a population survey was carried out in a fishing community in Wakayama Prefecture. The BMD measurements of the lumbar spine (L2-L4) and proximal femur (femoral neck, trochanter and Ward's triangle area) were performed by sex and age, using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

Uneven distribution of complementary sex determiner (csd) alleles in Apis mellifera population

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
The complementary sex determiner (csd) gene determines the sex of the western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.). Bees that are heterozygous at the csd locus develop into females; whereas hemizygous bees develop into males.

Population structure of two freshwater amphipods (Crustacea: Peracarida: Hyalellidae) from southern Brazil

open access: yesNauplius, 2018
Two recently described amphipods species from southern Brazil, Hyalella georginae Streck and Castiglioni, 2017 and Hyalella gauchensis Streck and Castiglioni, 2017, had their population structures characterized by sex, females’ ovigerous condition ...

DISTRIBUTION OF NON-MALIGNANT HEMATOLOGICAL DISORDERS BY SEX, AGE GROUPS AND TYPE OF DISEASE BASED ON BONE MARROW ASPIRATION IN POPULATION OF KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWA, PAKISTAN

open access: yesGomal Journal of Medical Sciences, 2019
Background: The distribution of non-malignant hematological disorder varies across globe by sex, age groups and type of disease. The objectives of this study were to determine distribution of non-malignant hematological disorders by sex, age groups and type of disease based on bone marrow aspiration in population of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan ...

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.

What has happened to the females? Population trends in the Aesculapian snake at its northern range limit

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2019
Populations at the edge of their main range of distribution are often exposed to suboptimal environments. They therefore exhibit a greater susceptibility towards habitat changes and often clearly differ in their structure and dynamics from populations in

Crucial parameters for precise copy number variation detection in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded solid cancer samples

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that copy number variations (CNVs) can be reliably detected in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded (FFPE) solid cancer samples using ultra‐low‐pass whole‐genome sequencing, provided that key (pre)‐analytical parameters are optimized.

Cartilage thickness and bone shape variations as a function of sex, height, body mass, and age in young adult knees

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
The functional relationship between bone and cartilage is modulated by mechanical factors. Scarce data exist on the relationship between bone shape and the spatial distribution of cartilage thickness.

Correlation of the differential expression of PIK3R1 and its spliced variant, p55α, in pan‐cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
PIK3R1 undergoes alternative splicing to generate the isoforms, p85α and p55α. By combining large patient datasets with laboratory experiments, we show that PIK3R1 spliced variants shape cancer behavior. While tumors lose the protective p85α isoform, p55α is overexpressed, changes linked to poorer survival and more pronounced in African American ...

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.
