Estimation of Population Percentiles [PDF]
Percentiles play an important part in descriptive statistics of continuous data, and their use is recommended for reference interval estimation.1 We have selected various methods for the calculation of percentiles based on recommendations in the literature or use in popular software, and evaluated the accuracy of the percentile calculated in the sample

Estimation of a Ratio in the Finite Population [PDF]
Summary: Estimation of the ratio of two totals is considered, when a probability sample from the finite population is available. Four estimators of the ratio are examined. The first one -- called ``simple'' -- is the ratio of the Horvitz-Thompson estimators of totals; the second -- the ratio of two ratio estimators of totals; the third one -- the ratio

Estimation of the Population Total-Utilizing Estimators of the Population Size
The estimation of the population total when the population size is unknown is considered. Two estimators using Direct Capture- Recapture sampling technique and another two using Indirect Capture- Recapture sampling technique are proposed. These estimators are compared numerically.

Estimating the cohabiting population [PDF]
This article summarises mid-2007 cohabitation estimates produced for England and Wales and compares these with estimates made for previous years. Over the last fifteen years there has been a rise in the number of cohabiting adults in England and Wales. Previous estimates indicate that there were 2.7 million cohabiting adults in 1992 (6 per cent of the ...

Estimating population dynamics without population data [PDF]
Abstract We develop a biologically correct cost system for production systems facing invasive pests that allows the estimation of population dynamics without a priori knowledge of their true values. We apply that model to a data set for olive producers in Crete and derive from it predictions about the underlying population dynamics.

Entropy Regularization for Population Estimation
Entropy regularization is known to improve exploration in sequential decision-making problems. We show that this same mechanism can also lead to nearly unbiased and lower-variance estimates of the mean reward in the optimize-and-estimate structured bandit setting. Mean reward estimation (i.e., population estimation) tasks have recently been shown to be

The Estimation of Biological Populations
Abstract : A number of statistical models, underlying the methods used in the estimation of the sizes and other parameters of animal population, are set up. The relevant estimation equations are given, with their variances and covariances. For the most part, the theory is designed for large populations.

Estimating Population Proportions by Means of Calibration Estimators
Summary: This paper considers the problem of estimating the population proportion of a categorical variable using the calibration framework. Different situations are explored according to the level of auxiliary information available and the theoretical properties are investigated.
