An important step in the diagnosis of a cervical cytology specimen is estimating the proportions of the various cell types present. This is usually done with a cell classifier, the error rates of which can be expressed as a confusion matrix. We show how to use the confusion matrix to obtain an unbiased estimate of the desired proportions.

Estimating the Size of a Transient Population
Biometrics, 1999Summary. Migratory populations often stop over for short periods of time at predictable sites along their migration routes. These staging areas can be heavily used and are potentially critical to the survival of the migrants. This paper presents a method for estimating the number of individuals using such an area and their average residence time.

Fixing the Population: From Census to Population Estimate [PDF]
Significant nonresponse to the UK census presented major challenges to the estimation of the full population in both 1991 and 2001. In this paper I follow the implementation of agreed quality assurance strategies and their further development in response to the lack of confidence in the initial population estimates, but argue that the published census ...

Fine-grained population estimation
Proceedings of the 23rd SIGSPATIAL International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems, 2015We show how to estimate population numbers for arbitrary user-defined regions, down to the level of individual buildings. This is important for various applications like evacuation planning, facility placement, or traffic estimation. However, census data with precise population numbers is typically only available at the level of cities, villages, or ...

AbstractPopulation studies in archaeology rely on various methodological approaches, including the analysis of architectural remains, cemeteries, and field surveys. Chapter 3 of the book focuses on the different methods, formulae, and variables used to calculate population densities in both rural and urban areas.

Estimation of a Potential Hemodialysis Population
Medical Care, 1970Estimates have been made of the annual number of chronic hemodialysis candidates. Using mortality data and informed medical judgment, upper and lower bound estimates of the potential hemodialysis population were found to be from 6,700 to 8,400 annually for the age group 15-54 years.
