Multifractal nature of plume structure in high Rayleigh number convection

open access: yes, 2004
The geometrically different plan forms of near wall plume structure in turbulent natural convection, visualised by driving the convection using concentration differences across a membrane, are shown to have a common multifractal spectrum of singularities

Two‐Dimensional Materials as a Multiproperty Sensing Platform

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Various sensing modalities enabled and/or enhanced by two‐dimensional (2D) materials are reviewed. The domains considered for sensing include: 1) optoelectronics, 2) quantum defects, 3) scanning probe microscopy, 4) nanomechanics, and 5) bio‐ and chemosensing.

Study on the pore water pressure dissipation method as a liquefaction countermeasure using soil–water coupled finite deformation analysis equipped with a macro-element method

open access: yesSoils and Foundations, 2015
AbstractA numerical simulation of the pore water pressure dissipation method was performed using the GEOASIA soil–water coupled finite deformation analysis code, which is capable of accounting for inertial forces, together with the elasto-plastic constitutive SYS Cam-clay model based on the soil skeleton structure concept, with the goal of ...

Recent advances in the evolution of interfaces: thermodynamics, upscaling, and universality

open access: yes, 2018
We consider the evolution of interfaces in binary mixtures permeating strongly heterogeneous systems such as porous media. To this end, we first review available thermodynamic formulations for binary mixtures based on \emph{general reversible ...

Charge‐Induced Morphing Gels for Bioinspired Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a novel electroactive actuation mechanism that enables the gel material to generate substantial and reversible shape‐changing while preserving topological and isochoric (volumetric) equivalence. The resultant morphing behaviors can mimic the movements of muscle‐driven organelles in nature, including cilia‐like beating and ...

Earthquakes: from chemical alteration to mechanical rupture

open access: yes, 1998
In the standard rebound theory of earthquakes, elastic deformation energy is progressively stored in the crust until a threshold is reached at which it is suddenly released in an earthquake.

Solvent‐Free Bonding Mechanisms and Microstructure Engineering in Dry Electrode Technology for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Dry electrode technology revolutionizes battery manufacturing by eliminating toxic solvents and energy‐intensive drying. This work details two promising techniques: dry spray deposition and polymer fibrillation. How their unique solvent‐free bonding mechanisms create uniform microstructures for thicker, denser electrodes, boosting energy density and ...

Spectrally Tunable 2D Material‐Based Infrared Photodetectors for Intelligent Optoelectronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Intelligent optoelectronics through spectral engineering of 2D material‐based infrared photodetectors. Abstract The evolution of intelligent optoelectronic systems is driven by artificial intelligence (AI). However, their practical realization hinges on the ability to dynamically capture and process optical signals across a broad infrared (IR) spectrum.

Droplet Triboelectrification on Liquid‐Like Polymer Brushes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work investigates the triboelectrification of water droplets on polymer brush‐coated surfaces exhibiting minimal contact line pinning. Such surfaces enable the systematic study of electrode patterning and controlled changes in droplet contact area.
