Porous orbital implants and their behaviour during drilling
Orbit, 1999The use of porous spherical orbital implants enables ocular prosthesis motility to be improved if necessary by subsequent drilling of the implant and coupling it to the prosthesis with a peg. We compared the effect of drilling at different speeds on hydroxyapatite and porous polyethylene (Medpor) spherical implants.

Chocolate Cysts Associated With Porous Polyethylene Orbital Implants
Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 2020Late-onset orbital hemorrhage is a rare complication of alloplastic implant use in orbital wall reconstruction following trauma. The authors report 3 patients with chocolate cysts presenting 3 to 9 years after orbital fracture repair with porous polyethylene implants.

Extrusion of Porous Polyethylene Orbital Implant in Recurrent Retinoblastoma
Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 1998High-density porous polyethylene allografts are used as orbital implants in reconstruction of anophthalmic sockets. The use of this material for integrated buried implants is rather new, and studies on removed implants from humans are limited. We studied the case of a 6-year-old boy with an extruded porous polyethylene implant due to orbital recurrence

Since the introduction of the first coralline hydroxyapatite porous orbital implant as eye replacement in the early 1980s, numerous other modified porous implants have been developed. Due to the different design of the existing studies concerning long-term safety with, in some cases, relatively short follow-up, a comparison is difficult and none of the

Repair of fractures of the orbital floor with porous polyethylene implants
British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2007Our main aim was to evaluate the long-term results after reconstruction of the orbital floor with porous polyethylene implants. Twenty-six patients with fractures of the orbital floor were included in the study. The main cause of fractures was road crashes. They also complained of enophthalmos (n=19), diplopia (n=21), limited extrinsic ocular motility (

Prevention of Exposure of Porous Orbital Implants Following Enucleation
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 2007To investigate effectiveness of adding a scleral patch graft on a Vicryl mesh-wrapped porous orbital implant to prevent exposure following enucleation.A retrospective, comparative, nonrandomized study. From October 1996 to February 2006, 74 consecutive patients (74 sockets) who received porous orbital implants primarily or secondarily after enucleation ...

The Scleral Cap Technique for Porous and Nonporous Orbital Implants
Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 2022Purpose: To describe the results and potential benefit of a banked homologous donor scleral cap over the anterior surface of polyglactin 910 mesh-wrapped porous and nonporous orbital implants during enucleation and secondary orbital implant surgery. Methods: This is a single center,

Management of Porous Orbital Implants Requiring Explantation
Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 2014Purpose To perform a histopathological review of exposed porous orbital implants requiring explantation and to study the clinical outcome of replacement of the exposed implant with an autologous dermis-fat graft. Methods Case series. Analysis of the clinical charts of 25 patients (age 5 to 62 years) who were submitted to explantation of exposed ...

Actinomyces infection in porous polyethylene orbital implant
Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, 1997A 60-year-old patient developed actinomycotic inflammation within a porous polyethylene orbital implant which she received following enucleation. She had repeated conjunctival exposures with inflammation; the primary implant was removed and replaced with another one.The anterior two-thirds of the porous implant was infiltrated with numerous ...

Comparison of Complication Rates of Porous Anophthalmic Orbital Implants
Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina, 2011BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Porous anophthalmic orbital implants are used widely. This study evaluates risk factors for porous anophthalmic orbital implant complications and compares complication rates of hydroxyapatite, porous polyethylene, and polyglactin mesh-wrapped aluminum oxide implants ...
